Rose and I always go through these long brainstorming processes to narrow down our cosplays. It actually gets kind of ridiculous. We seriously love so many characters that it’s hard to narrow down one pair to recreate. Most recently, we spent about five hours on a drive from Houston to Dallas discussing which characters we would choose next. We ended up (very excitedly) choosing an awesome pair, only to change our minds about a week later. We actually wanted to do Aerith and Tifa from Final Fantasy VII, but we really wanted something that would challenge us a bit more. Their costumes are a bit plain. (If you can’t tell, we’re both die-hard Final Fantasy fanatics though.) We’ll probably end up doing those two lovely ladies one day, but for now we want to do something very stand-out-ish. So we decided on Madoka Kaname and Homura Akemi from Puella Magi Madoka Magica! <3. I will be cosplaying as Madoka, and Rose will be Homura.

Madoka Kaname Stock

This is Madoka Kaname, the adorable main character.

Homura Akemi Stock

And Homura Akemi, her kickass friend.

Kyubey Madoka Magica Stock

Kyubey. He’s cute, but there’s more to him than that!

Now if you don’t know anything about the original anime series Madoka Magica, I’ll fill you in. Madoka Kaname is a normal 14 year old girl who is approached by a mysterious (but adorable) creature named Kyubey. He offers to grant Madoka one wish in exchange for becoming a magical girl. The magical girls are responsible for hunting down evil witches and destroying them. It seems really simple, but being a magical girl comes at a high price. Madoka constantly struggles to find a wish that is worth putting her life on the line to fight the witches. She also meets a strange new classmate named Homura who continuously tries to discourage Madoka from becoming a magical girl. If you think this is a fun-loving and cutesy magical girl series, you’re dead wrong. It has dark and serious undertones, and a thought-provoking plot. Don’t let that discourage you though! This is a great series and the art is fantastic. I tried not to spoil the plot—I think I did a good job. If you haven’t seen the series I highly recommend it.

Here’s the U.S. site. Check it out!

Now back to my main point. We chose these two characters because we love them and we believe they fit our personalities pretty well. We each try to choose the characters in the pair that we can portray the best. (I think I’m better with semi-bubbly characters who smile a lot, and Rose is better with more serious characters.) We’ll both be posting some costume and makeup tutorials for these characters for you girls (or guys; we don’t judge) who would also like to cosplay these characters in the future. I can’t wait to start this cosplay!
